Synthetic Underlayment is the new industry standard over the outdated tar paper. It is stronger and does not break down over time like tar paper. With the new Florida building codes it also requires the synthetic underlayment to be installed with an overlap that results in two layers covering the entire roof’s surface.

Self-adhering underlayment “aka Peel n’ Stick” is an asphalt base bitume. It is applied directly to the roof sheathing using its self adhering backing. It serves the same purpose as the synthetic underlayment but requires no nails to hold it in place. Its primary function is to be a barrier between your roofs sheathing and the elements in the event shingles are damaged or removed during a strong storm. In events like a hurricane there is the possibility shingles could be blown off, with underlayment that is nail down this also could be damaged or blown off. With the self adhering properties of peel n’ stick the possibility of sheathing becoming exposed is very unlikely.
